QR Codes and In-Game Advertising

Lately we’ve been getting a lot of questions about QR Codes, and whether or not in-game advertising can accommodate for them. – The answer is yes.

For those of you that don’t already know, QR Codes are essentially square pixelated barcodes that have the ability to hold unique data and information. They’re commonly used in advertising, as QR codes can contain information about websites or promotions. In order for QR codes to be activated, they must be scanned by a device, such as a smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, etc..).

QR Codes are great for non-digital advertising channels, as they provide a way to track performance of a campaign. You can find QR Codes quite often in print advertising, on transit ads, and on retail packaging.

Although In-Game Advertising is considered a digital advertising channel, the in-game ad technology lacks the ability to drive traffic to an external website, so certain data can’t be tracked. QR Codes can come in handy here!

One great benefit of in-game advertising with regards to QR codes, is the fact that people are displayed the ads in their own homes. You see, there is a concern with placing QR Codes on ads that can be found in public places, such as on the bus or subway, because people are less likely to whip out their phone to scan the codes in public places, as they may be afraid to make a public association with the brand. Because In-Game Advertising takes place in the living rooms and private environments, people have nothing to hide or lose when scanning the QR Code!
